Cheat sheet:

  • If you're looking for a word with one missing letter, use a period. Two missing letters, use two periods or {2}. Increase the number in the curly brackets to increase the number of characters, or insert a range with a comma in between, ex. {0,5}.
  • If you don't know how many characters are missing, use .*.
  • If you know which characters you want, use square brackets to find multiple spellings, ex. [יו] for yud or vav.

"If you saw me you would not know me (cf. T-S 12.261 and T-S 6J6.19) on account of old age and lack of resources, and how I have to go up to al-Mahdiyya twice a day and the husband of [...] paternal uncle and my maternal aunt and my mother are (burdens) on my neck, and I have no strength but through God.

Toward the end there is a list of luxury goods (e.g. ambergris and pearl bracelets), which is part of a legal formula as all of them are negated (cf. T-S NS J185l (PGPID 26355)), and mentions a certain Moshe (so perhaps the trader is Moshe b. Rajā?). See also T-S AS 149.84 (PGPID 18611). (Information in part from Goitein's attached discussion, transcription, and translation.)

Ṭoviya opens by expressing concern for his sister who is sick (as in T-S 12.298). Either Ṭoviya or somebody else in his household was ill with a fever, and is now feeling better. […] MS heb. d.66/141 (which contains the most detailed description) and T-S 13J25.15 (in which she is starting to feel better) for the next two installments in the story of his wife's illness.

This is only the second known appearance of Ashū by name, and it shows that Goitein and Friedman were correct to conclude that she is the one referred to as "your house" in T-S Misc.25.103 (PGPID 4738). It is notable that Ibn Yijū continued to call her Ashū rather than the Hebrew name Berakha she took upon her manumission/conversion in 1132 (IOM D 55.10 (PGPID 5501)). Dating: Ibn Yijū and his family were in Jurbattan as of 1147 based on T-S Misc.25.103. He had left India for Aden by 1149, providing a terminus ante quem.

For another instance of this cryptic term "שקדריי" see T-S AS 210.78 (PGPID 38144). This list in Hebrew is likely from a broader booklet ENA 2898.7-14 where accounts also mention payments in sherifi (שרפי= produced post-1425 CE).
