Description

Letter (communal) in the hand of Yosef b. Yeshuʿa, writing on behalf of the community of Alexandria. Only the elegant rhymed prose opening of the letter has survived. Neither the recipient nor the context is known. (Information from Frenkel.) The identification of the sender is somewhat problematic, as the document itself contains only the phrase "from myself and from my son R. Yeshuʿa ha-Mumḥe." The handwriting appears to be identical to Bodl. MS heb. a 3/28 (PGPID 19284), in which case the scribe is Yeshuʿa b. Yosef; perhaps he is writing on behalf of his father. See also ENA NS 17.7 (PGPID 11722), a similar document with a similar identification of the sender(s).
