Description

Letter from a member of the nasi family of Mosul addressed to Shelomo b. Yishay. Dating: the events described in the letter likely took place in the 1190s CE, though it may have been written considerably later; many of the same scribe's other letters come from the 1230s CE, though there is no blessing for the dead after the name of Maimonides in this letter. The sender reminisces on a visit when he was younger to the house of Moshe Maimonides. He describes his reception by Maimonides, various other matters, includes information on the layout of Maimonides' home, and mentions a servant of Maimonides, describing him as the “keeper of the curtain" (purdah-dār), a duty similar to that of an usher. (S. D. Goitein, Mediterranean Society, 4:381, 454; 5:65, 522.) EMS. This letter is edited and discussed in Paul Fenton, "A Meeting with Maimonides," BSOAS vol. 45 no. 1 (1982), 1–4. In recto, l. 7, Fenton reads ר טוק, citing Goitein, and explains that "ṭawq means 'strength', especially that of a young man. Rabbi Ṭawq is colloquial for young man. The writer stresses the master's joviality." However, the phrase is much more likely ד טרק, meaning "four times." In verso, l. 3, Fenton translates "aqrāṣ laymū" as "lemon cakes." The term qurṣ (pl. aqrāṣ) should be translated "pastille," and refers to a small medicated or flavored tablet.   2. Al-Fakhr, may God protect him, went with us when
  3. we set out for Rabbi Moshe's [house] but he [preferred] for his part to remain
  4. at the entrance to the house while I and al-Jalāl proceeded to enter.
  5. I kissed his noble hand
  6. and he received us with a most cordial welcome.
  7. He said to me, "Come and be seated young man,"
  8. beckoning me to sit
  9. on the edge of the īwān, opposite where
  10. he [himself] was seated
  11. whilst he sat at the other end
  12. of the īwān. So I sat down while he read the message
  13. which I gave him, from beginning
  14. to end. He was delighted with the presents
  15. and started to play with al-Jalāl, may God protect him. There was no one else
  16. seated on the īwān save him,
  17. Rabbi Avraham, and myself.

  1. Then there transpired that which a book
  2. would prove insufficient to describe. Next, caskets were brought
  3. and he began to eat lemon cakes.
  4. We stayed [just] for a while but he detained me
  5. in order that we confer a moment confidentially.
  6. The master seemed favourably inclined. In the meantime
  7. Rabbi Avraham, may God protect him, had taught al-Jalāl
  8. a term with which to address
  9. Rabbi Moshe. Upon his reciting it [Rabbi Moshe] laughed
  10. with amusement and sported with the [child].
  11. I was the first to leave [the house],
  12. while al-Jalāl remained behind talking to the usher
  13. in the vestibule. Whereupon Rabbi Moshe
  14. enquired of Rabbi Avraham, "Where has his son gone?"
  15. "He is standing by the door," he replied.
  16. "Go and call him," he said, while re-entering [the door],
  17. whereupon he came across the [child who again] recited the form of address.
