Description

Legal testimony. The witnesses have examined (bāsharū) the Jew Ibrāhīm b. Abū l-ʿAlāʾ, and found that he had developed leprosy (judhām) on account of a black humor (al-khilṭ al-sawdāwī) and is therefore banned from moving freely and conducting business among Muslims. Witnessed by Aḥmad b. Abū l-Ḥasan and Abū l-Ṭāhir b. Abū l-Ḥasan. Dated: First decade of Rabīʿ II 660/February 1262. (Information from Khan's edition.)

  1. بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم
  2. شهد من يضع خط واثبت اسمه وهو المسلمون [الاحرار]
  3. الامنا والمقبولو القول في سهادتهم انهم باشروا ابراهيم بن بو العلا 
  4. اليهودي وقد حصل له من الخلط السوداوي ما وداه الى الجذام 
  5. وان ذلك يمنعه عن التصرف بين ظهور المسلمين والتكسب 
  6. ولما علموا صحة ذلك بمباشرتهم بما علموه اجابوها له 
  7. واثبتوها له في العشر الاول من ربيع الاخر من سنة ستين وستماىة

  1. In the name of God, the merciful and compassionate.  

  2. The people attaching their signature and registering their name (below), they being [free],  

  3.  trustworthy Muslims, whose statements in their testimonies are accepted, testified  that they have examined Ibrāhīm ibn Bū al-ʿUlā  

  4. the Jew (and found that) he has been inflicted with black humour and this has caused him to contract leprosy;  

  5. and that this prevents him from moving freely and going about his business among Muslims.  

  6. Since they recognized the validity of this after examining him and being apprised  of the true nature of his disease,  

  7. and since someone has requested them to register their testimony to what they  recognize, they have responded 

  8. to him by registering it, in the first ten days of Rabīʿ II of the year six-hundred and sixty.

  4.  I examined the man mentioned above and I found  

  5. in him the disease of leprosy. He is not permitted to move freely among
